Joseph J. Romm, a former Department of Energy official in the Clinton administration,  points out in his book The Hype about Hydrogen: Fact and Fiction in the Race to Save the Climate that hydrogen is an energy carrier, not an energy source. 

The book was published in 2004 and is a good technical analysis written non-technically of the complex issues involved in converting to a hydrogen economy.
