Derek Woodgate is President of The Futures Lab, Inc., based in Austin, TX, and is a practicing Futurist and founding member of the Association of Professional Futurists.
Derek set up The Futures Lab at the end of 1997, having previous experience as an executive on the board of two major corporations (Vivat and VF Europe), with responsibility for long-term global strategy. In addition, Derek has over 15 years Senior Vice-President-level management and operational responsibilities in international businesses and a 9 year spell with the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office in political and economic postings.
Derek is best known for creating revolutionary futures for major corporations including Nissan, Casio, WorldSpace, Ford, Pennzoil, Dial Corp, Cadbury-Schweppes, Lee and Wrangler jeans, Hugo Boss, Nestle, P&G, VNU, MTV, Intercontinental Hotels, and many more.
He graduated with a Bachelor Degree (Hons.) from University College London, in Contemporary Slav Studies and then gained his Masters in Economics – (concentration in politics) from Zagreb University, a city where he spent over ten years. He is a frequent conference speaker, panelist and commentator on the future. He is the author of Future Frequencies, a book about leveraging ideas and concepts from progressive culture for future studies. Derek also contributed to the major work on William Burroughs Calling the Toads.
Derek is a professional member of The World Futures Society and on the board of the Central Texas Chapter, The World Futures Studies Federation and is also on the Vision and Strategy Committee for the future of Central Texas. He has lived and worked in eleven countries and is at home in seven languages.
