Emergence: The Future of New Government and Economic Models

10-12 September 2012

As pressure mounts on the western combination of free market capitalism and individual rights that has dominated for hundreds of years, new models are coalescing and gaining strength. Social media is creating new currencies and political power blocs, global environmental pressures are redrawing the maps for regulation, corporations are becoming transparent, and social entrepreneurship is rising as the new business model. Emergence will explore some of the pressures on the current paradigm, search out weak signals of profound change, and look to the future of governance and economic models.

Europe, whose coffee houses drove the Age of Enlightenment upon which much of the global system is based, is a perfect backdrop for thinking deeply about what has been, what is, and what will be. On the diverse canvas of Oxford/London, participants will not only look back in built environments whose age span multiple paradigms, but also look forward in new spaces designed with our connected future in mind.

Program Overview

Registration opens at 2pm on Monday, 10 September, with a Town Hall meeting at 3pm. Officially the Gathering program begins at 5pm with the Opening Reception. The Gathering concludes on Wednesday, 12 September with wrap-up remarks ending at 5pm, followed by a formal dinner and Little Bigs (futures storytelling) till 9pm.

The Gathering has its home base at Wolfson College at the University of Oxford, where residential accommodation is also located. The program includes a visit to the Pitt Rivers Museum on Monday evening, a full day at Magdalen College on Tuesday, and a formal dinner on the evening of Wednesday, 12 September at Wolfson.

Registration

Both APF members and the general public can register to attend the Gathering. Members of the public who join the APF and pay the membership fee prior to the Gathering can register at the APF member rate.

Full residential registration includes accommodation and most meals for 10-12 September, with checkout on 13 September (breakfast provided).

An additional night's accommodation/breakfast for 9 September can also be booked when registering (additional fee applies).

Regional London Event

An open futures "world cafe" afternoon will be held on Thursday, 13 September at the Arup offices in London, beginning at 2pm with a formal program at 2:30pm. This is a regional event, expected to attract members unable to attend the Gathering as well as people from the futures/foresight community in the UK. It should be a significant networking event.
